About Cultural Connection

Built from the host family experience

Cultural Connection began more than 26 years ago around Jean Blackman's kitchen table in South East London.

Having raised five children on her own while also becoming a host family herself, Jean began organising her own groups. As more students arrived, the whole family played a part. Beds were made, tables were laid and packed lunches were prepared together. Jimmy even learned French through the hosting experience.

These were humble beginnings, but they built something lasting: a business shaped by real host family life and a deep understanding of what educational homestay actually involves.

Experience built the hard way

Over the years, Cultural Connection has seen the practical challenges that come with working with people and running group stays: late changes, arrival issues, host concerns, school expectations, coach logistics and the day-to-day realities of accommodation management. We have dealt with those problems, learned from them and built better processes because of them.

That experience is one of the reasons clients trust Cultural Connection. We know where the friction points can arise, and we work hard to clear the path so schools, organisers, hosts and students can enjoy a smoother and more successful stay.

Still proudly family-run

Today, Cultural Connection remains proudly family-run, but now supports around 7,500 students a year across a wider network of centres in South East London, Surrey and Kent.

The systems, processes and local teams have grown, but the personal approach behind the business remains central. Family ownership keeps decisions close to the operation, close to our hosts and close to our clients.

From hosting students to building the systems behind homestay

Years of running groups shaped more than how we recruit and support host families. They shaped the systems we use to run the accommodation itself.

We built our own tools because homestay has needs that generic accommodation software does not handle well. Those systems now run bookings, group information, participant allocation, placement lists, documentation and communication across the network.

Our principles

What has never changed

As Cultural Connection has grown, the scale and systems have evolved, but the principles behind the work have stayed the same.

  1. 01

    Know our hosts

Every host is visited, known by name and supported by an organiser who lives locally.

  2. 02

    Support our partners

Schools and agents get accurate information, early warning of changes and a real person to call.

  3. 03

    Solve problems quickly

Late arrivals, room changes, illness. Whatever happens, it gets handled the same day.

  4. 04

    Protect quality

Feedback, compliance records and host reviews decide who keeps hosting for us.
